Missionary and the Message

Our own Jennifer Baker some time ago answered the call to go into missions. She has now received her assignment from God; she will be going to southeast Asia this winter. Our church is supporting her in prayer, encouragement, and financially. At our Wednesday night prayer meeting, at our Sunday night prayer group, and even in our our personal prayer time, we have interceded for her for the sake of the Message and the glory of our Lord. Oak Ridge has came together to sell candy, give love offerings, give through monthly pledges, and put on a huge yard sale. God has provided each time, and brought about amounts of money that would seem impossible for our church our size, especially one with minor budget issues. Please pray for Jennifer and the message, that she will be faithful and that the message will have no hindrances, but will go forth due to the provisions being met. Revival May 22-25

Our annual Revival Services starts this Sunday morning@ 11am. The message and music will be delivered by Billy Wayne (click link for his biographical info). Sunday morning, we will have a covered dish dinner after the service. Then, Sunday night through Wednesday night we will meet at 7pm each night. If you can't come out and join us each time, please be in prayer for the hearts of the individuals attending to respond to God, as well as our church and community to do the same. VBS Big Apple Adventure...updated

Plans and prayers are already under way for the "Big Apple Adventure" VBS event. It will kick off Sunday evening, July 31st, and meet everyday at 6pm until the Family night finale August 5th, which will begin at 7pm. The motto this year is: Hear it! Believe it! Connect it! The theme verse is: "So, faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ" -Romans 10:17, ESV. Pray over the many kids and adults that will attend, and most of all for God to be honored in it all.
Update: Theme for each night:
Sunday: Hilarious Hat Night (wear your funniest hat)
Monday: Silly Socks nights (Have silly socks, wear them!)
Tuesday: Crazy Hair Night (Having a bad hair day? Good!)
Wednesday: Shocking Shoes Night (Wear two different shoes!)
Thursday: Inside Out night (Wear your shirt and pants inside out)
Friday: Family Night (Bring your family with you)
~No Prayer Meeting or missions classes July 20th, because we will meet at usual time, then divide up, and go out into the community and hand out flyers/information on VBS.
~Final Meeting for all workers July 24th at 5:30pm in Sanctuary

Annie Armstrong Offering April 17th

Sermon Series- Where's your heart?

Yesterday during Sunday morning service, we had a great finish to the sermon series on The Treasure Principle by Randy Alcorn. What did Oak Ridge walk away with? First, an understanding of the Treasure Principle: "You can't take it with you, but you can sent it on ahead" (Alcorn). We also discussed the 6 Keys the author gave for understanding the principle:

God owns Everything. I'm His money manager. We are the managers of the assets God has entrusted - not - given to us.

My heart always goes where I put God's money. Watch what happens when you reallocate your money from temporal things to eternal things (cr. Matthew 6:21).

Heaven, not earth, is my home. We are citizens of a better place - a heavenly place (cr. Hebrews 11:16).

I should live not for the dot but for the line. From the dot - our present life on earth - extends a line that goes on forever, which is eternity in heaven.

Giving is the only antidote to materialism. Giving is a joyful surrender to a greater person and a greater purpose. It dethrones me and exalts Him.

God prospers me not to raise my standard of living, but to raise my standard of giving. God gives more so we can give more - generously.

Each family present during the series also got a free copy of the book to read and pass on to others. And although the sermon was brought about by low giving and a budget shortfall, the lessons obtained were more than just about money. Of course the imperative of tithing was present, but also the surrender of the heart, will, and mind. As well as giving the most valuable thing of all: time. As followers of Christ, we were reminded that our receipts, calendars, attitudes, relationships, etc. tell the true story of if we have truly been following our Lord. Serving self, or sacrificially, generously, and consistently giving up my rights, time, talent, and treasure for the glory of the Father. As did Jesus by leaving heaven and coming to earth, taking on flesh, giving of Himself, and ultimately taking the wrath of sinners on the cross. Our Lord shared many truths requiring His followers to evidence that in their choices (Matthew 6:21, John 13:34-35, John 15). This series was a refreshing reminder of living the simple life: In Christ, for Christ, and by Christ. Depending on Him in all things, not worrying and hoarding... Hope you discovered or rediscovered the joy of giving.

Prayer

At Oak Ridge, we depend on prayer day to day to communicate with God. We come together every week at the Wednesday evening serivces (7pm) and offer up community needs coorporately. We also print the needs in the Sunday bulletin every week. On our Home website we have a prayer page, where you can post your request either publicly (appears on site) or privately, where only administrator of site will see it and pray over the need. You can also post praises or answers to prayer there for the encouragement of the church. So, click this link and join with us in prayer.

Great things happening and coming...

Attended the marriage conference yesterday, and it was a great time in the Lord. Today, the same key speaker will be delivering the message, Brad Hambrick, who is Executive Director at Crossroads Counseling. To give you a brief overview:
The title of conference: "Loving your Spouse with excellence"

Hour 1 we covered Perfect Love Casts out all Fear based on 1 John 4:18. During that hour, we talked about the different 'currencies' that cause fear, such as 'currency of pleasure, power, approval, & perfection vs. building an economy of grace and truth.
Hour 2 we discussed The Marks of Enduring Love based on 1 Cor. 13. The 5 'Marks' are Commitment and Care, Integrity and Realness, Other Mindedness, Mutual Respect and Honor, and Repentance and Forgiveness.
Hour 3 we talked about Love that Sparks... in a Good Way, which was the part about intimacy.

Brad done very well at relating in practical terms, as there were many nudges and 'looks' between couples during illustrations. He also pointed out that all 3 are related, such as how hour 3 can't be taken alone, but must be joined with hour 1 and 2 to be effective and real.

Other events coming soon that you don't want to miss:
Children and Youth Day Feb. 26th beginning at 9am and ending about 2:30pm.
Men's Fellowship Feb. 28 7pm.
Annual Church BBQ March 4-5. We will deliver plates, or you could come by church.
Women of Purpose March 8th 7pm.

I encourage you to involve your family in giving. Jill and I involve our children. We explain the importance of giving to the efforts of reaching the nations for Christ. This is a great to teach your family and be reminded yourself of God's heart to reach the nations with the Gospel.

2) On the evening of the 12th will be our Christmas Dinner Show

3) On the morning of the 19th we will be having a Missions March as we collect our Lottie Moon Offering for International Missions (there will be an additional post on ideas to consider as you give)

4) On the evening of the 24th we will be having our Candlelight Christmas Eve Service at 6pm

5) The 27th to 29th Our Youth Minister Lonnie Smith will be taking our Youth will be in Pigeon Forge, TN for the Strength to Stand Conference

So encouraged

I have been so encouraged of late. We have two families that have loved ones who have Hospice caring for them. In watching how these loved ones have been cared for by our members I have been encouraged and challenged. It is an honor to be able to serve those who are serving others so well. What a beautiful expression of the Gospel! I praise God or these families and how they are loving and serving those they love so much at the end of their lives. May we all be challenged to do the same - to love and serve sacrificially for the sake of the Gospel and those around us!

Homecoming is here, which you may have read in our big city paper. This Sunday, October 10th, we will have our Homecoming that only happens every other year. So come on out, and stay after for a good meal. Hope to see you this Sunday.

It's hard to believe that it has been over a month already for us here at Oak Ridge! What a blessing it is to serve the Lord with you! As time passes and as we continue to grow together it will be exciting to see how God moves in our midst! I leave for Jr. I.A. Camp (the camp that I'm involved with) on Saturday morning. I will give updates through the week on my facebook page and will update the blog about how HE has moved while at camp when I return. Thank you for loving us so well! VBS is coming round the corner!

Vacation Bible School is, well I guess I should say, roundin' the corner. The dates are August 1-6, kicking off on Sunday Night and ending with 'Family Night' on Friday. The times for Sunday through Thursday is 6-8:30pm, which includes a meal at the beginning, crafts, Bible lesson, games, music, and more for all ages. Each age group is broke down in seperate classes to make lessons more effective. Each night kicks off with everyone eating together then heading over to the Sanctuary for the 'Worship Ralley.' The last night, Friday, will be 'Family Night' and we will meet different times and location. It will be from 7-8:30 at the Kershaw Pavilion and Pool. It will include a meal and the kids showing their families what they did throughout the week, then we will all go over to swim, which will also include games for those who are not interested in swimming. This is always a big community and family event that has proven to be a great way to spend Friday night. So, come join us for the week! The wait is over; God has provided a Pastor

We have learned a lot through the process of praying and waiting, praying and searching;
however, we are very glad this two year process is over.

Pictured to the left is Dale and Jill Myers, and their three wonderful children.

We had a church fellowship with them Saturday evening, then Reverend Dale brought the message Sunday morning. Following that we voted to call "Pastor Dale" and his family to our church. We are praising and thanking God, as now, we press on together. Philippians 3:14

Update on Launch of Children's Church

"Route 252" was the name that was voted on by the children on launch day of the new Children's Church. The name is based on Luke 2:52. Things have adapted a little since the start, but the core idea that came about as a response to VBS is still there: To have something exciting and engaging for all elementary-aged kids on a weekly basis. We center everything around the Bible lesson theme for the day, which usually includes music, craft, game, snack, movie clip, etc. The layout of the "Veggie Connection" material is much like a VBS or BYBC, but every Sunday instead of just one week during the year! So bring your kids to "Route 252" for a safe, fun, and informative hour every Sunday at 9:45 am (See our Map and Directions page).

ALL Aboard!!! VBS '09 was a big success! Thanks to lots of prayers, many hard-working people, and a bunch of energetic kids! To the left is Samantha, her and Megan led the worship time through music and motions.

And of course, what's VBS without the director, Stephanie, getting not one but two pies in the face! The boys made a come back and won the week long challenge against the girls, so they got to give Stephanie a whip cream makeover.

How well did the week go? Well we got two thumbs up from interim pastor Don Coppedge!

We also noticed little smiling faces throughout the week!

If you did not get to join us for VBS on the 'Boomerang Express' this year, then be sure you do not miss out on the fun next year!
